English breakfast in Northern Scotland

OK - sorry but i cannot remember where is this place!!!! I only know it is in the northern part of Scotland, after Ullapool.

We were driving along the coastal road when we came across this little place serving food - so we stopped there for lunch. It was a 'strange' lunch!!!! We had English breakfast at Scotland for lunch! But is was so so good!

Typical English breakfast - bacon, egg, fried bread, sausages, a fried tomato and black pudding! Black pudding? We din know wat it was when we ate it but we loved it, being typical Chinese! If you dun know wat it is, check it out here.

Japanese @ Misato, Chinatown (London)

Just walk Wardour Street from Wong Kei and you come across this small unassuming eating joint:-

You would prolly just walk pass by, not paying much attention to it. Not very attractive from the front - but come during meal times and yr attention will be drawn towards it. For you would notice a long steady line outside!!!!

Yes, people queue up and wait for long periods of time (even during freezing winter) just to get a seat in this place.

But once you are in, you may still be surprised at what is the big deal. It serves pretty ordinary sounding Japanese food.

But it is goooooood!!! The portions are HUGE and the price is sooooo affordable! So no wonder you'll see a lot of asian students eating there. You'll prolly end up sitting next to another Malaysian the next time you are there!

I had this grilled salmon bento set the first time i was there

But most people will go for the rice with meat options - the prok or chicken katsu, curried, or the delicious beef! The mountain of rice in the pic above is covering a generous portion of pork katsu!

Seafood @ The Company Shed, Mersea

It was a plan long made, thought to never happem not forgotten and eventually fulfilled. I've been planning to go for seafood at Mersea for most of the time i was studying at Colchester. I left with my Masters but without the seafood experience... until i returned half a year later!

We took the bus to Mersea on a lovely summer day. Our destination - "The Company Shed".

A popular choice, no doubt, seeing the number of people eating there. We had to wait outside for a place.

But the wait was worth it! First up - butter garlic mussels!

And then, the main course - mixed seafood dish made up of 3 different sizes of shrimps, crabs, more mussels, clams. No sauce, no gravy - just the tasty freshness of the seafood! Yum!

Kebab @ Rose Burger & Kebab Centre

I'll be posting food from the UK for the rest of this month - since i can't go there. i can at least talk about the place!!!! =)

I love kebab! Tried many places in the UK - but to me, this was the best i've ever had!

This was recommended by a colleague at a Chinese restaurant where i used to work at. I decided to try it out and have been going back there each time i'm back at Colchester!

The meat is so tender and juicy.

So if you're at Colchester, drop by at Rose Burger & Kebab Centre - 4 Barrack Street, Colchester, Essex CO1 2LJ.

Hokkien fried noodles @ Petaling Street, KL

This is the famous stall in KL - been around for generations!!!! The best thing is that it is still good - and it opens til early in the morning!!! So yeah, if you can't get yr usual kebab fix after pub-bing (like how u used to in the UK), u can get this - more messy, less mobile but still just as satisfying.

But i must say that while it is good, it is not so wonderful tt i would travel all the way there just to eat it! But if i'm in the neighbourhood, why not?

Bacon Cheeseburger @ Botak Jones, Singapore

I was told to try out this place when down in S'pore - Botak Jones. Apparently, very nice burgers but at food court prices. Why? The joints are located at food courts!!!!

Yup, no aircond. But it was alright. Here is the burger i had - bacon cheeseburger:-

The fork there is just to give you an idea how big it was.

The verdict? Nice. Not great but nice. Check out their menu and outlets here at their website.

Tiramisu @ Delicious, Bangsar

The food at delicious is good - but that's another post. I'm blogging about the desert.

I was told their tiramisu was pretty good. So i gave it a try.

It came in a glass and i was pleasantly surprised! Nice, nice! the pics speaks for themselves.

It was tasty - right blend of ingredients, not too overpowering nor too sweet, wasn't dry. It was cold too which made it nicer - for me anyways!

As a little postscript, these pics were taken a few years ago when i went there for the first time. Recently, i went back there again and din really like again - there was this sour taste to it. Maybe it has gone bad?

English breakfast @ Hotel Ibis, Reading

I love English breakfast! I love bacon!!!!! Enuf said.

I was at Reading last year for work and stayed at Hotel Ibis. Nothing spectacular but it was strategically located and the place was clean. Loved the place.

The icing on the cake was the breakfast - it was buffet style and i would be there early every morning, reading the newspapers and watching the news on the TV while enjoying my food.

They have bacon, eggs, sausages, cereal, fruits etc. I would go for a few rounds, ending off with more and more bacon. It was really good - not overcooked till it was hard and crispy but it was nice and tender.

Surely one of the highlights of my trip! =)

Burger @ Carl's Junior, Midvalley

Have a big craving for burgers? Well, u may want to try out Carl's Jr!

Take a look - the finger is in the pic to give an idea of how big the burger is - compared to those from fast food restaurants.

So yes, the plus point is the size! It doesn't disappoint! A look at the pic above also assures u it is not dry!

Another plus point are their fries - you can actually taste the potato and bits of skins still on the fires - not processed stuffs!

And you can help yrself to as much relish as u like!

The downside? Well, the taste just wasn't there for me. And the price is a huge put-off. I might as well go to places like Chile's and eat their burgers there - and request that it's medium rare.

Nasi Lemak Antarabangsa @ Kampung Baru, KL

I love nasi lemak!!!! Yeah, i would travel all the way down to KL in the middle of the night to a place where i dun belong (yeah, we were greeted by looks - not stares, but looks), just to eat it!

I'm talking about nasi lemak antarabangsa. At the time of writing this post, i discovered that it has now many 'modern' branches all over! But i went to the original one at Kg Baru.

Apparently, it is called nasi lemak antarabangsa cuz people of all races came to love it! It is almost as old as i am - which makes it pretty old!!!!

The verdict? The memory of it tasted better. But it wasn't too bad. I like the rice which was not too sticky nor too soft. The sambal is the kind on the sweet side. It would be nice if it came with peanuts.

But i would not travel all the way there again just to eat it - i might perhaps visit one of its modern branches!

Pork noodles @ SS3, PJ

This used to be the place for pork noodles. The wait was expected - after all, good things comes to those who wait!

It was the best pork noodles at that time. It was so tasty and jammed packed with pork - pork liver, minced pork, pork meat, pork intestines, chee yau char! So be warned - if u're not into entrails, then avoid this like a plague.

But the last few times i was there, i found the food to be a little cold - not as hot as i would like it to be. And in recent times, i've discovered another place - IMHO, a place which serves better pork noodles! More about that when i get pics of it - but still, this one at SS3 is still pretty good.

Lemongrass prawn spaghetti @ Food Foundry

This was really yummy! The prawns were fresh - easy to get the shells off and crunchy. The pasta was done very well - not too hard nor overcooked.

Just a little warning tho. It is a little spicy! Oh, and when i had it, it was very oily!!!! It would have been nice if they had some bread/baguette to dip into the oil at the end of the meal (just like how Michael used to do back in Rayleigh Tower!).

Beef noodles @ Wisma Sabah, Sabah

The last time i was at Kota Kinabalu, me mate Chris asked wat i wanted for lunch. Beef noodles, i said, without hesitation. So she brought me to Wisma Sabah, at one of the higher floors. Sori, i can't remember which floor. But a lot of office people eat there - so it's not a touristy place but a place for the locals.

It didn't disappoint. As you can see, it has all the 'spare parts' of the cow in addition to the beef slices. The soup was beefy good - and as an extra, the chilly sauce they served there really packed a punch! :-)

Jap food @ Sushi Tei, Tropicana City Mall

One of the first few places we dined at the Tropicana City Mall was at Sushi Tei. To be honest, we din think much of the main courses of rice and ramen. But the appetizers (yeah, a lot eh?) were pretty good!

Dai Dai Roll

Ika Sugatayaki - grilled cuttlefish

Hand rolls - Salmon Skin (R) & California (L)
